When Rocinante fired its PDCs to the predicted location the Pella was to evade to it deployed its torpedos to attack from all other angles to disuade the Pella from moving in any other direction. The Pella underwent repairs to spaceproof its hull from battle damage sustained in the fight against the Rocinante Lauber's repair skiff was used to fuse new hull plates over damaged segments. Inaros, furious with the result, ordered the two senior-most officers of the Lauber spaced Rosenfeld Guoliang complied, later spacing Lauber's executive officer and weapons officer. Lauber was later forced to be abandoned due to its excessive damage, a repair skiff being salvaged and transferred to the Pella. The Pella undergoes repairs to assuage battle damage. However, Holden deactivated the explosive warhead, allowing the Pella to slip away in retreat. Inaros refused, and as negotiations broke down, Draper opened fire with a torpedo that was certain to destroy the disabled Pella. Aftermath Įstablishing communication with the Pella, Holden ordered Inaros' surrender. Bullets tore through the ship, killing CIC personnel and damaging the ship, leaving it adrift.

When Rocinante's fifth railgun strike approached the Free Navy ship, it dodged to port-as expected-and impacted directly with the PDC fire. Simultaneously, Draper manually fired three PDCs in a direct line towards Pella's predicted position. Rocinante fired four torpedoes at Pella this was done to occupy their attention. The Pella is damaged by Rocinante's PDCs, having fallen victim to the smaller ship's trap. However, noticing that the Pella consistently dodged to port, Draper and Holden hatched a plan. Aboard Rocinante, Roberta "Bobbie" Draper-having observed the Pella's maneuvers-insisted on a fourth railgun strike this, again, missed. These torpedoes were again destroyed by Rocinante's four remaining PDCs, and another railgun strike was attempted on the Pella however, the Free Navy light cruiser dodged once more. Rocinante retaliated with another railgun strike, but this was dodged by the Pella, which fired four more torpedoes. Pella fired a further four torpedoes, all of which were intercepted again by Rocinante shrapnel from the torpedoes successfully damaged two of Rocinante's PDCs, however. Granicus withdrew to render aid to Lauber, leaving Pella alone in combat. The success of this attack was only due to the Lauber failing to take any evasive manouvers. Holden successfully executed this maneuver, crippling the Lauber with a single perforating hit. To successfuly fire its Railgun, the Rocinante would have to spin 180º, fire, and spin a further 180º to resume its escape burn. This was a desperation manouver as they were not in Close Quarter Battle, making a hit unlikely. Recognizing that the Free Navy elements vastly outgunned the Rocinante in a prolonged torpedo duel, James Holden elected to power up the Rocinante's railgun. The Lauber is critically damaged with a hit from Rocinante's railgun. Rocinante returned fire at Pella with four of its own torpedoes, all of which were also successfully intercepted. Initiating combat action, the Pella opened fire with torpedoes alongside Lauber and Granicus twelve torpedoes burned for the Rocinante, all of which were destroyed in quick succession. Rocinante later acquired radar sight of the three Free Navy warships, and quickly moved to battle stations as well. Inaros, eager for a fight, could not turn down the opportunity to destroy the Rocinante, and ordered his ships to battle stations. The Rocinante was burning towards Ceres Station on an opposite course, and was spotted by the Pella. These ships were all operating under radio silence. Marco Inaros and his flotilla-consisting of the former-MCRN Pella and the armed Belter ships Lauber and Granicus-were burning away from Ceres, having recently abandoned the station. Prior to the engagement, neither force was aware of the location of the other.
